How to Grow TONS of Carrots

on November 4, 2015

If you’re like us, when you grow a vegetable you don’t want just one or two. Our philosophy is that if it takes the same amount of work to grow 3 as it does 90, then we want to grow 90. Carrots quickly became one of our favorite crops to grow in our GreenStalk tower garden because you can grow so many at a time. In the photo below, we are using a 6 tier GreenStalk garden which isn’t technically available for purchase… But more on that later.

To grow up to 90 carrots in your GreenStalk gardening system, plant 3 carrots in each pocket. If you have a 3 tier system you can grow up to 54 carrots, if you have a 4 tier system you can grow up to 72 carrots, and if you have the largest system you can grow up to 90 carrots in less than two square feet! Another secret to growing with GreenStalk is that you can start just about anything from seed and do a direct sow.

Here’s what our carrot plants look like a few weeks after a direct sow. (Don’t you like the bright orange GreenStalk?!)

When growing from seed, you may need to water each pocket individually in the very beginning until you see some green! After that, just water the tower garden from the top water reservoir. They are surprisingly easy to grow and homegrown carrots taste so much better than ones that you would pick up in the grocery store.

More about the 6 tier….

As you know, a GreenStalk is not just a container garden but it is also a slow drip watering system that doesn’t use electricity or pumps. The reason we don’t sell a 6 tier system is because the GreenStalk wasn’t designed to water that many tiers. We use a few to grow extra large quantities of veggies but we have to water them extra carefully. To keep watering simple and easy we only offer a three, four, and five tier system. So that’s the story behind those 6 tiers you’ve been seeing every now and then!

I am interested in your product. What type of plastic is it? Is it Bisphenol free?

What type of carrots work best in the GreenStalk. I just purchased one and getting ready to sow seeds. Thank you.

Great question! Carrots in general do really well in the GreenStalk. I prefer long slender carrot varieties so I can plant more in a pocket (3-4 seeds per pocket). But if you got a carrot variety that produces spherical carrots, you could probably do 2-3 seeds per pocket. I hope that helps! Happy Gardening!

One of my favorite gardens was the one that was 1/2 a girly garden and 1/2 a man’s garden. It wasn’t so much the whole design of it, but there was a combination of the yellow hellebore, orange sedge, pink tulips and ‘Carmel’ Heuchera. It would only look good for a very short period of time, but the effect was impressive.
