Top Tips for Seed Starting

Top Tips for Seed Starting

Before You Begin:

  • Be sure to read through all information on the seed packet for best germination and care for that particular seed type.
  • If growing indoors, your local hydroponics store can help you set up a grow light and give you advice on how to be successful.
  • Choose light and fluffy potting soil or seed starting mix — avoid garden soil with large wood chunks.
  • When transferring plants outdoors, keep your first and last frost dates in mind. Watch your local forecast and have a plan to protect seedlings during unexpected frost.

To Plant:

  • Thoroughly moisten the soil in each cell before planting.
  • Place 2-4 seeds in all cells first then cover or press down to the recommended depth. (A plastic spoon and toothpick can be helpful to distribute the number of seeds.)
  • Seed size = seed depth — follow directions for how deep to plant.
  • Most seeds need only moisture and warmth to germinate, but a few—like lettuce—need light.
  • Once seedlings have sprouted, they need sunlight or grow lights, and air circulation. If they are on a heating mat, they can be removed. Depending on variety, thin seedlings to one per cell by pinching the extra ones off at the surface.
  • Seedlings do not need fertilizing until they are well-established and have true leaves. Baby plants need baby food, so use diluted NPK.
  • Transplant seedlings into your GreenStalk Planter when they have 3-4 sets of true leaves and a strong root system has formed.
  • Plants started indoors should be gradually exposed to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before being transplanted outside.
