What To Do With Your Vertical Garden In The Winter?

One of the most common questions we get is, what do you do with your GreenStalk Vertical Planter in the winter? In this post, we are going to detail all the options for storing and overwintering your vertical garden.

First things first, the GreenStalk Vertical Planter is not going to crack or break in freezing weather. We're so confident of this, that we back all of our planters with a 5 year warranty even if you leave your planter outside year round.

Option #1 Clean out your GreenStalk Planter for a fresh start next season

If you'd like to start each season with a clean slate, this is the option for you! You can clean out your vertical garden easily and stack it down for storage inside or out. Follow this step-by-step tutorial to make your GreenStalk Planter look like new:

Harvest/remove plants to soil level.
Empty the planters into your garden or into the trash if the soil has had an issue with disease/pests. Make sure soil is dried out before attempting to lift planters. Most of the weight of the tiers comes from the water added.
Clean each piece with dish detergent and water.
Once you're done cleaning your GreenStalk Planter let it dry. Then stack it all together for easy storage and transportation.

Option #2 Leave your planter outside all winter long

This is a great option if you don't want to store your planter, or if you'd like to keep your potting mix for next season. Just be sure to amend your soil in the spring to give it some fresh nutrients. We love to add all purpose organic fertilizer - like our worm castings.

We recommend pruning your annual plants down to soil level to make the transition to spring easier by not adding any plant cleanup to your checklist. Pruning the dead plants/plants that won't make it through the winter also gives the GreenStalk a clean look.

Option #3 Overwinter your plants in your vertical garden

You can leave your cold hardy plants in your GreenStalk for the winter season. Just keep in mind that until the soil freezes (if the soil freezes), you will need to water your garden as needed. Check it once a week in the winter, even if you are getting snow.

Some plants, like strawberries, may look dead throughout the winter season, but they are just dormant. Once the weather warms, your plants will make a comeback and you'll be happy that you kept them throughout the winter season!

As you can tell, there's several options for how to overwinter/store your GreenStalk Vertical Garden. Our planters are meant to be used year after year and are durable enough to handle all kinds of climates.
