Customer Story: How Juanita Found Joy in Gardening at 81

For 81-year-old Juanita G., gardening has been a lifelong companion.

As the youngest of ten children growing up in a rural community in Southwest Virginia, she learned early that gardening was about much more than flowers and vegetables. It was how families fed themselves. Her mother, Alice, spent countless hours tending a garden that helped provide healthy food for the family while stretching every dollar.

Today, gardening represents something a little different for Juanita. While it once symbolized survival and nourishment, it has become a source of beauty, peace, and joy. And thanks to a thoughtful gift from her daughter, she has found a new way to continue doing what she loves.

We first connected with Juanita’s daughter, Tammy, after she shared her mother’s gardening story in the GreenStalk Gardener Group on Facebook. We were so moved by their story that we reached out and asked if she would be willing to share more about her mom’s gardening journey, favorite memories, and what makes gardening in a GreenStalk so special.

A Lifetime in the Garden

Juanita has gardened on and off throughout her entire life.

As she and her husband grew older, they decided to sell their home and acreage and move into a condo. While the move relieved them of the responsibilities that come with maintaining a large property, it also left a noticeable void.

She missed being outside. She missed her flowers. Most of all, she missed her beloved rose bushes.

As traditional gardening became more physically challenging, Juanita shifted her focus to container gardening, allowing her to stay connected to the plants and nature she loves.

The Best Mother's Day Gift

Juanita's daughter, Tammy, discovered GreenStalk after seeing gardeners showcase the incredible harvests they were growing in their Vertical Planters.

She quickly became a fan herself and purchased several planters. This spring, she surprised her mother, sister, and two close friends with GreenStalks, growing every plant for every pocket from seed before gifting them.

But there was another motivation.

"My sister and I have always jokingly competed to see who could give our mother the best Mother's Day gift," she shared.

When she spotted the pink GreenStalk planter, she knew she had found the winner.

"It beat out my sister's gift of an Elvis bust statue. Not many things can win over Elvis!"

Conversations With Cucumbers

One thing everyone should know about Juanita: she loves to talk.

According to her daughter, she would happily choose conversation over eating any day of the week. She also firmly believes that talking to plants helps them grow.

Her GreenStalk has become the perfect combination of both passions.

Each day, she provides gardening updates to neighbors, family members, and anyone willing to listen. She speaks to her cucumber vines as though they're old friends and keeps everyone informed through family group chats about every new blossom and vegetable.

"My dad thanks me daily," her daughter joked.

What's Growing in Her Greenstalk?

At the moment, cucumbers are stealing the show.

Juanita is growing both salad cucumbers and mini snacking cucumbers, and they are thriving. Her dwarf tomato plants are also doing well as she eagerly watches for blossoms to appear.

Alongside the vegetables, begonias and marigolds add beauty while helping attract pollinators and support companion planting.

“Buy the GreenStalk. The vegetables are nice, but the happiness it grows might be the best harvest of all.”

Memories in the Garden

Some of Juanita and Tammy’s favorite memories were created in the garden.

Tammy fondly remembers bean-picking season when she was growing up. Every year, the family grew enough green beans to can more than 250 quarts.

Relatives would gather on the porch for hours, snapping beans, sharing stories, laughing, and working together.

At the time, it felt like endless work. Looking back, those simple moments became some of the family's most treasured memories.

A Celebration of Life

Perhaps the most meaningful part of Juanita's gardening story extends far beyond the plants themselves.

Twenty years ago, Juanita and her daughter faced breast cancer together.

When her daughter saw the pink GreenStalk planter, she immediately knew it represented something much bigger than gardening.

"It was a celebration of life, resilience, and all the years we've been blessed to share since," she said.

Today, matching pink towers stand in both of their gardens; a reminder of their journey and the strength they've shared through the years.

At 81 years old, Juanita still finds wonder in every bloom, every blossom, and every tiny vegetable that appears in her garden. Her GreenStalk has provided more than a place to grow plants. It has given her purpose, excitement, and daily connection to the hobby she has loved her entire life.

And for her family, watching that joy bloom again has been a gift all its own.
