Celerity tomatoes harvested from a GreenStalk Vertical Planter

The Best Tomato Varieties to Grow in Your GreenStalk

Tomatoes are one of the most asked about crops in the GreenStalk community, and for good reason! They're the crown jewel of the summer garden, and growing them in a vertical planter means you don't need a sprawling backyard to get a real harvest. But not every tomato is a natural fit for GreenStalk growing. If you're planning your tomato lineup for the season, this guide is for you: a practical rundown of the varieties we've grown, tested, and actually recommend for the GreenStalk.

The Plant Support and Trellis help support tomato plants as they climb and grow.

What Makes a Tomato Variety GreenStalk Ready?

The short answer: compact growth and container adaptability. Determinate varieties, those that grow to a set size and stop, tend to be the easiest to manage in a vertical planter and are a great starting point if you're newer to growing tomatoes this way.

Bushy, container-adapted varieties stay tidier, need less staking, and won't make a run for the rest of your planter. Indeterminate varieties can absolutely be done in a GreenStalk (we do it) but they need more support and more attention. For the full breakdown on growing either type, our How to Grow Tomatoes Vertically in a Small Space guide covers everything you need to know.

Slicers & Paste

Standard slicing and paste tomatoes tend to be the largest plants in the GreenStalk lineup, so variety selection matters more here than anywhere else. These are the ones we've grown and can speak to — a mix of reliable classics and a GreenStalk seed variety still earning its place.

  • Celebrity — Our all-time favorite. Reliable disease resistance, beautiful medium-large fruits, and consistently great flavor. Start here if you're trying one standard tomato this season.

  • Early Girl Bush — Compact and early-producing. A great pick if you're working with a shorter growing season.

  • Roma — Prolific and dependable, though more of a sauce and salsa tomato than a fresh-eating one.

  • Ace 55 Bush (GreenStalk seed variety) — Our own results have been inconsistent so far, but we're still testing it. Stay tuned!

Cherry Tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are some of the best-suited varieties for container growing — smaller roots and lighter fruits, they produce heavily all season long. These are the ones we keep coming back to:

  • Sun Gold — Hard to beat on flavor. Sweet, complex, and wildly popular for good reason.

  • Patio & Husky — Both bred for container growing. Low-maintenance, reliable, and great for first-timers.

  • Cherry Fall (GreenStalk seed variety) — One of our favorites. Produced heavily and kept going well into late season when everything else was winding down.

Micro Dwarfs

Micro dwarfs are a category of their own. Truly tiny plants, often under 12 inches tall, that produce small but real tomatoes. They won't out-produce your cherry varieties, and they're not always the most impressive in flavor. But if you're working with very limited space, growing with kids, or just curious about what this category can do, they're worth a try.

  • Tiny Tim — The most reliable micro dwarf we've grown.

  • Orange Hat — Didn't blow us away, but if you're curious about the micro dwarf category, it's a reasonable starting point.

One of the best things about the GreenStalk format is that you don't have to choose just one. Grow a slicer, a cherry, and a micro dwarf in the same planter and you've got fresh tomatoes for every occasion — salads, sauces, snacking, and everything in between. Plant a few varieties and let the season surprise you.
